What are our hopes for the church?
In one sense, this is a deeply intimate question because it evokes the possibility of both disappointment and delight. And in another sense it is a necessary question, for the way in which it is answered will shape our life and labors in the world. In the past several years, many of us in the PCA- and many of you- have begun to ask this question with renewed, if cautious, energy.
We think this question is best asked- and best answered- in community. And this conviction has led us to host a conversation of sorts so that we might come and ask it together.
We would be grateful if you would join us.
As a way of framing the conversation, we'd like to discuss our hopes for the church in terms of five areas:
- The ethos of our church
- The theological practices of our church
- The worship of our church
- The ecclesiology of our church, especially as it relates to other ecclesial bodies
- The mission of our church to the world
Our format will be a thirty-minute presentation on each of these topics followed by significant time for leisurely and thoughtful discussion. But because we realize that a conversation such as this one consists not only in thinking but also in praying and befriending, our days will begin and end with a service of prayer, and we have left room for time together in between.
Our own modest hope for this conversation is that men and women, pastors and congregants, students and practitioners, might all come together and listen, talk, pray, and sing; ultimately to give themselves to the labor of building a lovelier church.
In the days to come we will be praying that you will be with us- and that the Savior will help us as we come together. Pray with us.
