Christians Helping in Park Slope (CHIPS)

Park Slope Christian Help, Inc. (CHIPS) is an organization administered by the Franciscan Sisters of the poor with the mission “…to heal the wounds of Christ in poor suffering humanity.” They provide for the needy primarily in 3 ways: Food, Clothing, and Shelter.

1. Soup Kitchen: The daytime soup kitchen is open Monday through Saturday from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. All those who are hungry and in need are welcome. Volunteers work throughout the day (anytime from 9-2pm) preparing, cooking and serving hot meals.

2. Clothing Drive: You can help the clothing drive in two ways, by dropping off clothes at the address below or volunteering your time in sorting, hanging and arranging the clothes items that are donated. They accept clothes Monday through Friday from 8 am to 2 pm. The drop off center is located at: 200 Fourth Avenue, Brooklyn between Sackett and Degraw. Mens’ clothing is mostly needed because 80% of the soup kitchen attendees are men. Only bring clothes for the current season. Toiletries have also been requested (toothbrush, razor, etc.)

3. Women’s Shelter: The Frances Residency Program is a transitional home for nine prenatal and postnatal homeless women (mostly teens) and their infants. The women can stay up to twelve months while they are working toward self-reliance and the acquisition of permanent housing. Each mom has her own studio apartment with a kitchen. Volunteers act as a “house parent,” helping the mom and baby with any needs and making sure they sign in and out of the residence. There are 3 volunteer shifts: 8am-4pm, 4pm-12am, and 12am-8am. Most volunteers serve once/month or act as on-call volunteers.

*Community groups can also organize food or toiletry drives for CHIPS. Contact them for more information.
