Adult Literacy
”Learn to Read @The Library” is an innovative educational program for beginning adult readers and writers, offering resources and instruction through volunteer tutors and technology-assisted learning. It operates out of five Brooklyn Public Library Learning Centers located at the Bedford, Central, Coney Island, Eastern Parkway, and Flatbush libraries. These Centers flourish as a direct result of the BPL's commitment to serving the lifelong learning needs of the people of Brooklyn.
Volunteers are needed to help adults learn to read, write, and use computer technology. BPL is looking for volunteers who are active learners and comfortable reading and writing. Volunteers will tutor adults who are 17 and older, English speaking and reading below a pre-GED level. Volunteers will receive training from BPL.
For information on becoming a volunteer tutor, call
(718) 832-3560, ext. 2 or Email: or attend a Literacy Volunteer Session.
