Brooklyn Jubilee
Brooklyn Jubilee is “a Christian organization formed for the purpose of cultivating healthy neighborhoods in Brooklyn, and promoting peace and prosperity for all of Brooklyn by creating and nurturing programs for social and economic justice.”
The purposes of Brooklyn Jubilee are to “(a) Provide legal assistance and education to indigent Brooklyn residents; (b) Advocate and provide for the needs of low-income Brooklyn residents; (c) Conduct activities to foster peaceful resolution of conflict between Brooklyn residents; (d) Support Brooklyn religious organizations, schools, and non-profit organizations in their service to the community, particularly those organizations who are serving the needs of low-income Brooklyn residents.”
Brooklyn Jubilee’s first (but not last) program will be a legal services ministry, providing advice to low-income tenants at the Helping Hands food pantry about their housing rights. Volunteers will work directly with food pantry patrons during their normal Saturday morning grocery pick-up. Working under the supervision of one or more attorneys, all volunteers will help food pantry patrons answer basic questions that will enable them to learn about their rights to housing, food stamps, and public health insurance.
Volunteer commitments can be flexible. Generally, volunteers will be expected to commit to at least one Saturday morning per month, for a minimum of six months. No experience is necessary. You do not need to be a lawyer to volunteer! All the training you need will be provided before you start volunteering.
