Our Church

History
In many ways, the history of Park Slope Presbyterian Church begins in the late 1980's when Tim Keller agreed to pastor for a new church in Manhattan—a church that would be the beginning of a whole network of churches throughout the New York metropolitan area.  In 1989 Redeemer was born and has been true to its church planting vision.  In the Fall of 2002, the Reverend Matthew Brown and his wife, Deborah, were praying about the possibility of starting a new church in New York City. Matt was then serving as Associate Pastor at Trinity Presbyterian Church, another work started by Redeemer in Rye, NY.  In particular, Matt and Deb were praying for an opportunity to serve in Brooklyn because both of them had ministered in the borough during their years at Nyack College. Matt began to ask the Redeemer Church Planting Center about the possibility of starting something in Brooklyn and then learned of the various small groups that were already hoping for a new church.  Soon thereafter, the Redeemer Church Planting Center and the Metro New York Presbytery called Matt to plant the church in Park Slope.

Matt and his family moved to Park Slope in August of 2003 and spent the next few months raising support and preparing for the start of morning worship. At the same time, interest in the new church was growing and a “Launch Team” had formed to assist in all of the tasks that needed to be accomplished before worship could begin. In addition, this team began to “gossip” to their friends and neighbors about the church.

After an extensive search for a worship site, the new church reached an agreement with the John Jay High School.  The first worship morning worship service was held on March 15, 2004; Park Slope Church was born!  Keep reading for a detailed version of our story...
