A new round of Sunday School classes will begin on May 9th and continue through June 27th. There are classes available for all ages, so bring the entire family and enjoy this opportunity to grow together! The adult class offerings are as follows.
God, Food, and Love: How to Eat Like a King
Food is woven inextricably into the story of God and his work in the world: food is central in the first scene of the Bible; it’s central in the last. And to a large degree the story of God and his work in the world is eventuated in the story of food and man’s relationship to it. Food is central to who we are as human beings and communities; our food practices comprehend nearly everything important that we do in life. For these and other reasons most of us love food. And while there is much to celebrate in Brooklyn’s food culture, there is still much to lament. The loss of local-culture food practices, disparity resulting from poverty, personal gluttony and obesity, the rise of nutritionism and dieting, disappearing hospitality, convenience and the encroaching culture of the suburbs have all contributed to the devaluation of our cooking and eating practices.
So what is food‘s purpose, its meaning? How do we intentionally and unintentionally abuse it? How might we together develop a beautiful and ethical culture of food and eating? Join us for an eight-week Sunday School class as we seek to answer these questions and articulate strategies for faithful participation in God’s gift of food. We encourage you to read through The Supper of the Lamb* by Robert Farrar Capon during the course of this class. We’re also planning to include workshops on practices such as home-brewing, bread-making, pickling, gardening, and more. Please send Pastor Jamison an e-mail if you’re planning to regularly participate. Beginning May 9th.
When God Doesn’t Send a Telegram: How Christians Can Make Wise Decisions
Which career path should I follow? Should we have another child? Marry the person I’m dating? We all make thousands of decisions a day, some bigger than others. In the middle of all the options, how can we know what God wants for us? During this eight week workshop on biblical decision making, we’ll discuss and practice how we can conform our personal narratives to God’s greater redemptive narrative, learn to approach risk with faith, and enjoy the options before us. Participants are encouraged to read through Step by Step: Divine Guidance for Ordinary Christians* by James Petty during the course of the class. We begin on May 9th!
*The books used for these classes are available for purchase at the book table.
